In this new book in the Gospel According To series, Garrett looks at the theological elements in dozens of classic Hollywood films, including a discussion about what the new openness to spirituality in the movies might mean for the future of American cinema and American religion.
Using films as diverse as It's a Wonderful Life, Field of Dreams, American Beauty, and Pulp Fiction, Garrett examines how Hollywood films treat the existence of God, the nature of faith, good and evil, redemption, and justice. As he writes about his first viewing of Pulp Fiction, films can have a powerful spiritual effect, even when that is not their intent:
All I knew was that when I left the theater, it was as a slightly different person than I was when I went in - slightly more hopeful, slightly more open to the possibility that there might be a God (and to the possibility that he, she, or it might be moving in my life), and more than a little anxious to have that kind of experience with the holy again.
Grant Garrett is the author of the memoir Crossing Myself, the nonfiction books Holy Superheroes! and (with Chris Seay) The Gospel Reloaded, and the critically acclaimed novels Free Bird and Cycling. He has written for many publications, including Poets & Writers, Christianity Today, and Ethics Daily. He is Professor of English at Baylor University and Instructor in Writing at Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest.
