4 Young S Jesus Calling
Thomas Nelson 2004 1591451888 Hardcover
[Number in stock: 1]

Jesus is calling. Do you hear him?

After many years of writing her own words in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to be more attentive to the Savior's voice and begin listening for what he was saying. So with pen in hand, she embarked on a journey that forever changed her - and many others around the world.

In these powerful pages are the words and scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Words of reassurance, comfort, hope. Words that have made her constantly aware of his presence and allowed her to enjoy his peace.

Jesus is calling out to you in the same way. Maybe you share the author's need for a greater sense of God with you. Or perhaps Jesus seems distant without you knowing why. Or maybe you have wandered farther from Him than you ever imagined you would. Here is a year's worth of daily readings from Young's journals to bring you closer to Christ and move your time with him from a monologue to a dialogue.

Each day is written as if Jesus himself were speaking to you. Because he is. Do you hear him calling?

Sarah Young's devotional writing is helping untold numbers of women and men in their quest for intimacy with Christ. Sarah has a degree in philosophy from Wellesley and holds graduate degrees in psychology/counseling from Tufts, Georgia State, and Covenant Seminary. Sarah and her husband have traveled widely, counseling and planting churches in Japan and Australia. They currently minister to Japanese people living in Perth, Australia.

6 Young B H Meet the rabbis - Rabbinic thought and the teachings of Jesus
Hendrickson 2007 156563405 Paperback
[Number in stock: 1]

What does Jesus' Sermon on the Mount have in common with ancient literature of the Jewish rabbis? Much more than most Jewish and Christian people often realize! Jesus was addressed as rabbi, as were the most devout teachers in the synagogues of his day. Despite the common values and Scriptures shared by these two great religions, many Christians have little knowledge of the great Jewish rabbis who wrote from the time of Jesus and the writing of the New Testament in the first century to the completion of the Talmud in the seventh century. Young believes this ignorance of the important literature and religious leaders of that period has caused an unnecessary division between the adherents of both religions.

Brad H. Young is Professor of Biblical Studies in the Graduate School of Theology at Oral Roberts University. In addition to his well-known research on the life of Jesus, he has devoted much of his entergies to Jewish-Christian interfaith dialogue.

7 Young J Nietzsche's philosophy of religion
Cambridge 2006 052168104X Paperback
[Number in stock: 2]
In his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche observes that Greek tragedy gathered people together as a community in the sight of their gods, and argues that modernity can be rescued from 'nihilism' only through the revival of such a festival. This is commonly thought to be a view which did not survive the termination of Nietzsche's early Wagnerianism, but Julian Young argues, on the basis of an examination of all of Nietzsche's published works, that his religious communitarianism in fact persists through all his writings. What follows, it is argued, is that the mature Nietzsche is neither an 'atheist', an 'individualist', nor an 'immoralist': he is a German philosopher belonging to a German tradition of conservative communitarianism - though to claim him as a proto-Nazi is radically mistaken. This important reassessment will be of interest to all Nietzsche scholars and to a wide range of readers in German philosophy.

  • Rejects the ‘individualistic’ reading of Nietzsche common to virtually every Anglophone interpretation of his work
  • Sets Nietzsche in the context of nineteenth-century German thought, in which he can be properly understood
  • Young offers a chronological ride through all of Niezsche’s works and integrates all the major Niezschean themes into his discussion

9 Young & Stearley The bible, rocks, and time - Geological evidence for the age of the Earth
IVP 2008 0830828765 Paperback
[Number in stock: 1]

Is the Earth relatively young or very old?

We've all heard the controversy. The consensus regarding the age of the Earth, based on the best geological evidence, is that it is billions of years old. But many Christians believe that the Bible teaches the Earth is only a few thousand years old at best. What are we to make of this discrepancy? Geologist Davis Young and Ralph Stearley tackle this issue head-on.

Thoroughly examining historical, biblical, geographical, and philosophical perspectives, the amply illustrated Bible, Rocks, and Time takes a comprehensive and authoritative look at the key issues relating to the Earth's antiquity.

Davis A. Young (Ph.D., Brown University) is Professor Emeritus of Geology at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ralph F. Stearley (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is professor of geology, geography, and environmental studies at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

10 Young S The book is dead - Long live the book
New South 2007 0868408043 Hardcover
[Number in stock: 1]

The book is dead shows that even though more books are published every year, books died a while ago, long before the internet. How can this be? Everyone thinks that the electronic media killed the book, but the book is dead long live the book argues that we did it ourselves. It shows that most books are not products of a book culture, keen to explore new ideas and take risk. The vast majority are anti-books; cynical marketing-driven printed objects designed to capitalize on whatever the spin doctors declare is hot. Fewer people are reading them and their impact on our world is diminishing.
br>Sherman Young, passionate book lover and a digital consumer and producer, is on a mission to make book culture matter again. Shirking nostalgia and without apology, he investigates the economics and technological requirements of publishing, making a case for books and reading all the while. His bold and exciting book will inspire readers, non-readers and publishers to put books centre-stage again, even if they're not books as we now know them.
