Walker Peter In the Steps of Jesus - An Illustrated Guide to the Places of the Holy Land Lion 2007 0745951929 / 9780745951928 Hardcover [Number in stock: 1]
Billions of people across the planet have heard of Jesus Christ, the preacher from Nazareth. But how many have the chance to follow in his steps and walk the sites of the Holy Land? This book offers readers that opportunity whether they intend to visit the land of Israel/Palestine or not. It is a travel guide for the traveller and non-traveller alike.
Author and biblical scholar Peter Walker has on many occasions led study groups to the Holy Land. In this accessible book he shares the fruits of his research and expert knowledge, offering readers a rich and illustrated guide to the sites Jesus visited. Following the chronology of Jesus' travels and drawing especially on the Gospel of Luke, we move from Bethlehem to Nazareth to the desert, and then take the extended journey from Galilee to Jerusalem.
Each chapter focuses on a particular place associated with the life of Jesus and includes a biblical overview exploring what that place was like in Jesus' day. The author seeks to explain Jesus' ministry in its original context and also to assess if there is any relevant biblical history or association that can add meaning to our understanding. Each chapter goes on to explain and interpret what people would see if they visited that site or area today. Included here are questions of archaeology, the possible authenticity (or not) of the site, and the recorded evidence of later pilgrims or historians.
Using full colour photography, maps, and timelines, and drawing on the latest scholarship, In the Steps of Jesus is a fascinating and absorbing guide to the life of Jesus. It gives readers a unique insight into the real world in which we live.
Peter Walker studied Classics and Early Church History at Cambridge University and has done extensive research at post-doctoral level on Christian attitudes to Jerusalem. He has led many study tours to the Holy Land and is now a tutor in Biblical Studies at Wycliffe Hall within the University of Oxford. His books include Holy City, Holy Places?, Jesus and the Holy City, Jesus and his World and, with Graham Tomlin, Walking in His Steps.

WALKER W John Calvin Christian Focus Pub 2005 1845501047 / 9781845501044 Paperback [Number in stock: 2]
Greater than any other Reformation era figure, John Calvin stimulated the debate, thoughts and ideas that have come to dominate Western culture and society. Dedicated to teh reform of the church, and insistent on a literalistic reading of scripture, his influence radically changed the face of Protestantism and Society.
Society's abhorrence of corruption in government, and the correspondent lack of it in Western Democracies, is largely down to his work. He was the first major political thinker to model social organization on Biblical principles, one of his most important innovations being the incorporation of the church into city government. As a result, Geneva became the most important Protestant centre of Europe in the 16th Century.
Calvin's transformation of the political, social, philosophical, and cultural landscape of Europe permeates the doctrine of Presbyterian, and other Reformed churches worldwide, to this day.
Williston Walker produced this benchmark biography in 1906: it is still the best. Gripping, enlightening, and authoritative - you will learn of a man whose theological stance and political philosophy has done much to shape modern Western culture and continues to influence millions in the 21st century.
Williston Walker (1860-1922) was Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale and Dean of Twentieth-Century American Church Historians. His many publications and papers are collected and filed at Yale University.

MONOD A (WALKER C K-ED) Living in the Hope of Glory Presbyterian & Reformed 0875525687 / 9780875525686 Paperback [Number in stock: 1]
A nineteenth-century spiritual classic about living wholeheartedly for Christ, so as to have no regrets at life’s end. Real, practical spiritual wisdom. Living in the Hope of Glory (originally titled Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. It consists of a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, as he suffered from terminal cancer. His family and friends met in his bedroom each Sunday during the last six months of his life to partake of the Lord's Supper and to hear his exhortations. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living consistently, powerfully and joyfully for the Lord, even in the midst of hard times. A week before his death Monod said, I have a Savior! He has freely saved me through his shed blood. . . . All my righteous acts, all my works that have been praised, all my preaching . . . is in my eyes only filthy rags. A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.
Adolphe Monod (1802-1856) was a well known preacher and leader in the French Reformed Church. He was a pastor of various French congregations, including the prominent Reformed Church of Paris, and a professor at FRC Seminary, Montauban. His published sermons and essays have been widely circulated for over 150 years. Constance K. Walker, editor and translator, is a Senior Research Scientist at Duke University. She has published more than 50 articles in the field of physics, and has given a number of talks on science and faith.
