2 BARTH K Church Dogmatics - Volume 1-1 - The doctrine of the word of God (paperback)
T & T Clark 1936 0567050599 / 9780567050595 Paperback
[Number in stock: 12]
Unlike many of the systematic theologies of his day, Barth does not begin his Dogmatics with a prolegomena describing the philosophical and/or cultural influences upon his thought. Rather, Barth boldly begins with his doctrine of the Word of God, which receives priority over every other ideology or influence thought to affect one's theology. After explicating the threefold form of the Word of God (the Word preached, written, and revealed), Barth turns to the substance of revelation in his treatment of the triune God. This move is also equally noteworthy, given the predominant influence of Schleiermacher, who reserved his exposition of the Trinity as an appendix to his theology. In distinction, Barth grounds the entire project of his magnum opus in both an explication of the triune God and a trinitarian understanding of the Word of God.

3 BARTH K Church Dogmatics - Volume 3-1 (paperback)
T & T Clark 0567050793 / 9780567050793 Paperback
[Number in stock: 9]
The third doctrine Barth examines in his Church Dogmatics is the Doctrine of Creation. Barth does not begin the Dogmatics with creation because of his strong conviction that creation can only be known and interpreted in light of the revelation of God. Apart from such a guiding principle, creation and its so-called orders can be turned into idols, which is exactly what occurred during the nazification of the German Church. Barth commences the Doctrine of Creation with faith in God the Creator, which is the starting point for any knowledge of creation. He then moves on to treat the relation of creation to the covenant and concludes the volume with analysis of God's gracious Yes in affirming the goodness of creation.

4 BARTH K Church Dogmatics - Volume 3-2 (paperback)
T & T Clark 0567050890 / 9780567050892 Paperback
[Number in stock: 7]
Barth continues his treatment of the Doctrine of Creation, turning his attention in the present volume away from creation in general (volume III.1) and focusing on the human creature in particular. This second part of the Doctrine of Creation showcases Barth's theological anthropology, which is based in christology. As such, Jesus Christ is the source for our knowledge of the nature of humanity who makes possible the prospect of relationship between the human and divine. By utilizing Martin Buber's concept of the I-Thou relation, Barth arrives at a relationally conceived interpretation of the imago Dei. Being human entails first, an encounter with the living God and second, an encounter with fellow-humanity, which is exemplified in the male-female relation. Barth concludes the volume with an examination of humanity as both soul and body as well as the human person's relation to time.

5 BARTH K Church Dogmatics - Volume 3-3 (paperback)
T & T Clark 0567050998 / 9780567050991 Paperback
[Number in stock: 5] [Number on order: 6]
This third part in the Doctrine of Creation continues the analysis of the relation between God and creation, beginning with an exposition of divine providence. Following the three-fold conservatio, concursus, gubernatio of the older orthodox dogmatics, Barth describes God's preserving, accompanying, and ruling the earthly existence of all creatures as their Lord and Father. Following the doctrine of providence, Barth examines the opposition and resistance to God's lordship, which he terms das Nichtige (translated primarily as nothingness). Also included in the volume is Barth's examination of angelology, which centers on angels as messengers of God rather than speculating into their nature. Barth concludes by treating the demonic opponents of God's ambassadors, who are exemplified as forces of chaos.

The fourth and final part of the Doctrine of Creation returns to the problem of ethics begun in volume II.2 (the Doctrine of God part 2). Again, Barth engages the theme of God's command in examining theological ethics in light of the divine call to covenant-partnership with God. In doing so, Barth takes up one of his central themes: freedom. Freedom before God, freedom in fellowship, freedom for life, and freedom in limitation constitute the major sections of this volume, which also treats such topics as prayer and vocation.

This concluding part-volume in the Doctrine of Reconciliation was never completed and thus remains a fragment. However, its contents set forth Barth's detailed exposition of baptism, which stands as the foundation of the Christian life. Barth divides his treatment into the dual themes of baptism with the Holy Spirit and baptism with water. The discussion contains Barth's rejection of infant baptism as well as his understanding of baptism as non-sacramental, in distinction to Roman Catholic theology. It also highlights Barth's treatment of the free response on the part of humans to the reconciling work of Christ.

10 BARTH K Church Dogmatics Vol.1 - 2 - The doctrine of the word of God (paperback)
T & T Clark 1956 0567050696 / 9780567050694 Paperback
[Number in stock: 17]
Building on his opening treatment of the Doctrine of the Word of God, Barth begins the second half of this foundational doctrine with christology, providing detailed exposition of the incarnation of the Word. He then turns to pneumatology, describing the importance of the Holy Spirit in the event of revelation. Also included is Barth's doctrine of Scripture, which in his language, becomes a witness to divine revelation only through the work of the Holy Spirit. Closing the volume stands Barth's doctrine of preaching, which also serves as a witness to God's revelation when it creates obedience to the Word of God. Barth stresses the themes of freedom and obedience throughout this closing volume of the Doctrine of the Word of God.

13 BARTH K Church Dogmatics Volume 2 - 2 - The doctrine of God (paperback)
T & T Clark 1957 056705179X / 9780567051790 Paperback
[Number in stock: 19]
The second half of the Doctrine of God begins with Barth's creative reformulation of Calvin's doctrine of election. This innovative rethinking of election is christologically grounded and moves beyond the often vexing issue of double predestination. Rather than speculating about an inscrutable divine decision to elect or reject certain individuals, Barth's thought leads him to affirm a universal election. Jesus Christ is viewed as both the elect and the electing God, who bore humanity's rejection through the cross. The second part of the present volume examines the problem and task of theological ethics by way of its origin in God's command.

16 Barth K Fifty prayers
Westminster John Knox 2008 0664231535 / 9780664231538 Paperback
[Number in stock: 2]
The first and basic act of theological work is prayer, so claimed Karl Barth in his last lecture series Evangelical Theology: An Introduction. But how did this preeminent theologian, widely considered one of the most influential theologians of his modern era, craft and present his own public prayers?

This collection for the first time makes Barth's pastoral prayers available to an English-speaking audience, offering a fresh perspective on how the Swiss theologian understood and practiced this central element of Christian life. Nearly fifty years since they were first spoken, these prayers continue to resound with direct and impassioned words that will comfort and challenge Christians today. The prayers are organized thematically and according to seasons of the liturgical year, making them ideal for both group use and individual reflection.

Karl Barth (1886 - 1968) was Professor of Theology at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He is best known for his monumental systematic theology, The Church Dogmatics. He is the author of many books, including Prayer: 50th Anniversary Edition

18 Barth K On religion
T&T Clark 2006 0567031098 / 9780567031099 Paperback
[Number in stock: 2]
The study of Karl Barth has generally been excluded from religious studies departments in favour of more liberal theologians such as Tillich. For many years, scholar Garrett Green has argued that there is no justification for this neglect. To support his theory that Barth can and should be studied as a religious theorist rather than just a theologian, Garrett Green presents a brand new translation of Chapter 17 of Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics prefaced by a detailed introduction to the text. This important new translation counters the idea that Barth rejected the notion of religion out of hand by correcting a number of errors in the original version that obscure Barth's central argument. In particular the crucial word, Aufhebung, in the title is translated here as sublimation rather than abolition. The translation will do better justice to the German original and will be more accessible to contemporary readers. Unlike the original version, all Greek, Latin and Hebrew citations are translated into English, and the NRSV is used for the Bible quotes rather than the King James. The translation is accompanied by a text by Garrett Green introducing the scholar and student to Barth as a religious theorist. The book concludes with appendices containing teaching materials and a summary of developed by the author in the classroom over years.

20 Barth K The Gottingen Dogmatics - Instruction in the Christian Religion - Volume One
Eerdmans 1991 0802833373 / 9780802833372 Paperback
[Number in stock: 1]

One of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century, Karl Barth is best known for his monumental Church Dogmatics, a work that changed the modern theological landscape. It is less well known that Barth taught three distinct cycles of course sin dogmatics during his lifetime. His first effort consisted of a series of lectures at the University of Gottingen in 1924-1925. These provocative lectures are available in English in The Gottingen Dogmatics, an accessible and profoundly pastoral work.

A superb, substantive introduction by Daniel L. Migliore, professor of systematic theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, highlights the theological historical significance of The Gottingen Dogmatics and compares this work with Barth's Church Dogmatics. Migliore points out, among other things, the intimate bond between dogmatics and preaching: in the Gottingen lectures we see a Barth who tenaciously does theology - indeed defines theology - in relation to preaching a pastoral praxis.
