1 Jones D A Angels - A History
Oxford 2010 0199582955 / 9780199582952 Paperback
[Number in stock: 3]

Guardians, messengers, protectors - what are angels?

In high art and popular culture, in religion and spirituality, angels have been a powerful presence throughout human civilization.

David Albert Jones reflects on the stories and speculations from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and post-Christian spiritualities. He explores the widely differently ways they have been portrayed in art: through young men in the Hebrew scriptures to androgynous winged creatures of the pre-Raphaelites, and the masculine 'Angel of the North'. He investigates the films of Wim Wenders and Frank Capra, and the literature of Milton and others. He examines the place of 'fallen angels', and he looks to why people find the existence of angels - at least in the human imagination - so enduringly powerful, attractive, and consoling.

David Albert Jones is currently Professor of Bioethics in the School of Theology, Philosophy, and History at St Mary's University College, Twickenham. Before moving to St Mary's he was a friar in the Dominican Order and studied at Blackfriars, Oxford

His previous publications include The Soul of the Embryo: An enquiry into the status of the human embryo in the Christian tradition (Continuum, 2004) and Approaching the End: a theological exploration of death and dying (Oxford University Press, 2007).

3 JONES A Facing Fear with Faith
Thomas More Publishing 0883474867 / 9780883474860 Paperback
[Number in stock: 1]

Who are we and what can we be? How have we changed after the tragic events of September11, 2001? Where does faith fit in and how has our basic philosophy of life been altered? Are we more present in our relationships, with each other, and with God? Sometimes things happen and everything appears in a different light - love, hope, even relationships. Redefining the bedrock of our beliefs, finding meaning, requires the energy of a compassionate heart that wants to teach in, in order to reach out.

Facing Fear With Faith is the collaborative effort of two such compassionate hearts who address the thoughts that permeate our days and offer resting stops for prayer and contemplation: Arthur Jones, author of New Catholics for a New Century and editor-at-large for the National Catholic Reporter, and Dolores Lecter, Senior Fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center of Georgetown University and former Executive Director of the Secretariat for Family, Laity, Women, and Youth at the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
